Run a finger over the mark with your eyes closed. If it is flat and only darker than the skin around it, it is an acne mark, and a brightening serum with daily sunscreen can fade it over a few months. If you feel a pit or a bump, it is an acne scar, and only a dermatologist's procedure can improve it.
The pimple came the week before Diwali. It hurt for three days and was gone in a week. The brown dot it left on your cheek is still there in December.
Now there is a cousin's wedding in February. The photographer will be close. The lights will be bright. Your mother has already asked why you are not "putting something" on it.
Here is the thing nobody at the chemist will tell you. A pimple can leave two different things behind. Only one of them answers to a serum.
The short answer
Flat and dark is a mark. It fades, and a serum with niacinamide or vitamin C plus morning sunscreen speeds that up. A pit or a bump is a scar. No cream fills a hole or flattens a bump. For those you book a dermatologist, who has procedures that work on Indian skin. Either way, the best thing you can do tonight is leave the next pimple alone.
Acne Marks vs Acne Scars: How to Tell Which One You Have
Close your eyes and run a fingertip over the spot. Flat means mark. A dip or a bump means scar. That is the whole test.
Think of your face as a painted wall. A mark is a stain on the paint. A scar is a dent in the plaster. You can clean a stain. A dent needs filling, and no amount of paint will do it.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) draws the same line. "These flat spots are usually not scars." And "Unlike scars, these flat spots usually fade, leaving no trace." In medium and darker skin, the flat spot is often brown. Its proper name is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. That means extra colour where the skin was inflamed. This article calls it a mark.
A scar is a collagen problem. Collagen is the protein that gives skin its structure and strength. When a deep pimple heals, the skin rebuilds with collagen. Too little collagen and you get a pit. Too much and you get a bump. The AAD lists three kinds of pit. An ice pick scar "looks small but goes deep into the skin", and it is the most common type. Rolling scars are "wide and shallow". Boxcar scars are round or oval dips with edges. Raised scars are "more common in people who have darker skin tones". A keloid is a raised scar that grows bigger than the pimple was.
So the first job is to work out what is on your face. Most of what Indian men call "acne scars" turns out to be marks. That is good news. Marks are the one you can do something about at home.

Why Do Indian Men Get So Many Acne Marks and Scars?
Two reasons. Our skin, and our thumbs.
Skin first. A South Indian hospital study of 309 acne patients found scars in 39.5% and dark marks in 24.6%. Most patients were 16 to 20. The men had more severe acne than the women. Ice pick scars were the most common type. An Indian expert consensus puts the mark figure higher. It says "more than 70%" of Indians under 35 with past acne develop marks. A US review of skin of colour found the same pattern. Marks after acne are "particularly common" in darker skin. Sunlight makes them worse. So does every new pimple in the same spot.
Now the thumbs. The AAD says "mild acne can scar when picked". The more severe the acne, the more likely it scars. Squeezing pushes the contents deeper and increases inflammation. The Indian consensus lists "squeezing and popping" as a cause of marks. So are scrubbing, skipping sunscreen and home remedies. In other words, the pimple decides whether you get a mark. Your fingers decide whether you get a scar.
The one thing that prevents both is boring. Get pimples under control early, before they go deep. The AAD puts it plainly: "Treating acne early may prevent acne scars."

How to Fade Acne Marks at Home: What Works
Marks respond to three things: sunscreen, a brightening active, and time. The order matters.
Sunscreen first. The AAD's advice for dark spots in skin of colour starts with sunscreen. It "can prevent new dark spots", and it stops old ones getting darker. The skin-of-colour review advises daily broad-spectrum SPF 30. The Indian consensus says photoprotection "is often underestimated". A serum without sunscreen is a bucket with a hole in it.
Then a brightening active. The AAD lists kojic acid, glycolic acid, vitamin C, azelaic acid and retinoids as ingredients that "can fade existing dark spots". The Indian consensus names three more. In its words, "nicotinamide, kojic acid and arbutin are considered good hyperpigmentation agents". Nicotinamide is niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3. A British Journal of Dermatology trial tested a 5% niacinamide moisturiser on 18 Japanese women for 4 weeks. It "significantly decreased hyperpigmentation" compared with the same cream without it. THERŌ's Active Oil Control serum carries niacinamide at 5% with salicylic acid, mandelic acid and green tea. It helps reduce the appearance of post-acne marks. If your marks came with tan and dullness, the Intense Bright Vitamin C serum is the other route. It has 10% stabilized Vitamin C with kojic acid and alpha arbutin, built to break down tan and dark spots. Visibly brighter skin in 4 weeks. Pick one serum. Not both on the same night.
The acids help too. The consensus calls salicylic acid "highly preferred" for reducing pigmentation. A Delhi trial gave 45 acne patients six clinic peels of salicylic and mandelic acid, or glycolic acid, two weeks apart. The post-acne pigmentation score fell by 12 weeks. Those were clinic strengths. The salicylic and glycolic acid in a face wash for oily, acne-prone skin are milder. Their job is keeping the pore clear, which is where the next mark would start.

The Routine for Acne Marks
Four steps, twice a day, built on the Cleanse, Treat, Moisturise, Protect routine.
Morning
- Cleanse. Lukewarm water and a salicylic acid face wash. Fingertips, 30 seconds, pat dry.
- Treat. 3 to 5 drops of your serum on a clean face and neck. Pat it in.
- Moisturise. A light moisturizer for oily skin. Marks on dry, irritated skin take longer.
- Protect. Sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, two finger-lengths for the face and neck. Every day, including the days you are "only going to the office".
Night
Steps 1 to 3 again. Skip the sunscreen. Do not add a second active because the first one felt slow.
Patch test a new serum behind the ear for two nights first. If a product stings for more than a few seconds, or your skin stays red, stop.

What Can a Dermatologist Do About Acne Scars?
For pits and bumps, this is the only section that matters. A serum does nothing for a dent in the plaster.
The AAD's list of scar treatments has seven items. Lasers that resurface the skin. Fillers, a treatment that "adds volume to depressed scars". Surgery that lifts the scar from the tissue underneath, called subcision. Chemical peels. Microneedling, which punctures the scar with tiny needles so it rebuilds. Radiofrequency. And for raised scars, corticosteroid injections. The AAD does not name a single best option. The plan is built for the person, and "treatment is not for everyone".
The good news for Indian skin is that the evidence here is Indian. A Pune split-face trial took 30 patients aged 20 to 40 with skin types III to V. Each had four monthly sessions, laser on one cheek and microneedling on the other. The laser side improved its scar grade by 32.9%. The microneedling side improved by 9.3%. The catch: 30% of laser sides developed new dark marks, against 6.67% of microneedling sides. The marks were more common in darker skin. Ice pick scars responded least to both. In Ujjain, 45 patients with skin types III to V had subcision plus microneedling. Four monthly sessions. 95.6% improved by at least one grade. Side effects were mild and short-lived. A Pondicherry trial of 64 patients added platelet-rich plasma to microneedling. That side did better.
Two honest notes from a 2024 review. Most people need "three to four treatments, spaced one month apart". And patients "need to be guided toward realistic expectations". Every procedure also comes with a prescription for high-SPF sunscreen afterwards. The skin that marks after a pimple marks after a laser too.

Mistakes That Turn Acne Marks Into Acne Scars
Squeezing. The AAD lists "permanent acne scars" first among the side effects of popping your own pimples. Infection from the bacteria on your hands is next. The NHS says it in five words: "do not pick or squeeze". The bathroom mirror at 11 pm has ended more faces than any cricket ball.
Toothpaste. A Cleveland Clinic dermatologist says toothpaste "will likely do more harm than good" on skin. It causes redness, stinging and irritation. Irritation is how marks start. Toothpaste is for the mouth.
The cream from the chemist. A study across 12 Indian dermatology centres screened 2,926 patients with facial skin problems. 14.8% were using a steroid cream on the face. A quarter were using it for acne. 59.3% had been told to by someone who was not a doctor. Side effects hit 90.5% of them. The most common side effect was new or worse acne. A steroid cream for pimples is a loan at 40% interest.
Scrubbing the mark off. The Indian consensus lists "frequent facial scrubbing" and home remedies among the things that push marks darker. A mark is not dirt. Scrubbing it is more inflammation in the same spot.
Skipping sunscreen because you are indoors. The scooter ride to the office counts. So does the window seat.
Quitting at week three. The Indian consensus says starting early "may be associated with faster resolution". It does not say fast. Give a brightening routine twelve weeks before you judge it.
How Long Do Acne Marks Take to Fade?
For a flat mark, the AAD gives the honest range. A spot a few shades darker than your skin "will usually fade within 6 to 12 months". If the colour "lies deep in your skin", it "can take years". The skin-of-colour review agrees. Marks in the top layer "may take months to years to resolve without treatment". Deeper ones "may either be permanent" or fade over a long time.
Sunscreen plus a brightening active shortens the top end of that range. The Intense Bright serum's "visibly brighter skin in 4 weeks" is about overall tone. It is not a promise that one specific mark is gone. Photograph the mark on day one in the same light and compare at week twelve. Your eyes lie. Your phone does not.
A pit or a bump does not fade at all. That is not a reason to despair. It is a reason to stop spending on creams for it and spend on one consultation instead.
When Should You See a Dermatologist?
Go when:
- The mark has a dip or a bump. That is a scar, and it needs a procedure.
- You keep getting deep, painful pimples, or pimples that leave a pit every time. Stopping those early is the best scar prevention there is.
- A dark patch is spreading, is on both cheeks in a mirror pattern, or did not come from a pimple.
- You have been using a steroid cream or a "fairness" cream on your face. Stop it and get seen.
- A mark has not improved after 12 weeks of sunscreen and a proper routine.
- A raised scar is growing, itching or hurting.
Prescription options exist for marks too. The Indian consensus names retinoids, azelaic acid and hydroquinone. They are prescriptions for a reason. Do not buy them over the counter on a friend's advice.
Acne Scars vs Acne Marks: Common Questions
Can acne scars be 100% removed?
Flat marks are not scars. In the AAD's words, they usually fade "leaving no trace". True scars, the pits and bumps, can be made much less noticeable with procedures. But the AAD's own page does not promise removal. The 2024 review talks about "realistic expectations". In the Indian trials above, improvement was measured in grades, not in disappearance.
What are the hardest acne scars to get rid of?
Ice pick scars, the narrow deep ones. They are the most common type in Indian patients. In the Pune trial they "responded the least" to both laser and microneedling. The 2024 review notes they are hard to reach with surface resurfacing. Dermatologists use targeted methods for them, like a strong acid placed into the scar, or cutting the scar out.
Can toothpaste remove acne scars?
No. It does nothing for a scar. On a mark it adds irritation, which is the thing that made the mark. Use a serum built for post-acne marks and keep the toothpaste for your teeth.
Is 14 the worst age for acne?
Close. In the South Indian study, acne began at about 16 on average, and most patients were 16 to 20. The AAD says about 85% of people aged 12 to 24 get at least some acne. It can carry on into the 30s and 40s. The scars from those years are what the 30-year-old is searching about.
How do Koreans get rid of acne scars?
With the same procedures listed above. Microneedling, subcision, lasers, peels and fillers are what dermatologists use everywhere. The trials most relevant to you were run in Pune, Ujjain and Pondicherry, on Indian skin. The habit worth copying from any country is simple. Sunscreen daily, and pimples handled early.
How can men get rid of acne scars at home?
You cannot fix a pit or a bump at home. You can fade a flat mark with daily sunscreen and a niacinamide or vitamin C serum, given three months. And you can prevent the next scar by keeping your hands off the next pimple.
Acne Scars vs Acne Marks: What to Do Tonight
Run a finger over the mark. Flat means mark. Start a brightening serum tonight, put sunscreen on tomorrow morning, and take one photo for week twelve. A dip or a bump means scar. Save the money you would have spent on creams and book one dermatologist appointment.
And whichever one you have, leave the next pimple alone. That is the only scar prevention that costs nothing and works every time.
