Dry Skin on the Face: What Men Should Use (and What Makes It Worse)

Dry skin on a man's face is a water problem in the top layer of skin, not an oil problem. Here is what causes it, the daily habits that make it worse, and what to put on it instead.

Dry skin on the face means the top layer of skin is losing water faster than it can hold it. Hot showers, hard water, bar soap, office AC, shaving and too many strong products all make it worse. Fix it with a gentle face wash, a light moisturizer on damp skin twice a day, and sunscreen in the morning.

It is 3 pm in a Bengaluru office. The AC has been on since 9. You shaved this morning, and your cheeks now feel one size too small. There are small flakes beside your nose. Your forehead, for reasons of its own, is still shining.

You wash your face in the office washroom. It feels good for four minutes. Then it feels tighter than before.

That is the whole problem in one afternoon. Here is the short version, then the proof.

The short answer

  • Dry skin is a water problem in the top layer, not an oil problem. Your face can be oily and dry at the same time.
  • The things that make it worse are daily habits: hot showers, bar soap, hard water, cold dry rooms, shaving, and stacking strong products.
  • Wash twice a day with a gentle face wash and warm water. Pat dry.
  • Put a coin-sized amount of a light moisturizer on damp skin, morning and night.
  • Sunscreen in the morning. Patch test anything new.
  • The tightness eases in days. The flakes take 2 to 4 weeks.

Why Does a Man's Face Get Dry?

Think of the top layer of your skin as a brick wall. A 2016 review in the Indian Journal of Dermatology uses this "bricks and mortar model". Skin cells are the bricks. Fats are the mortar. The mortar holds water inside the wall. When it thins, water escapes, and the wall feels tight and sheds flakes. The review puts a number on it: skin is dry when the water in that top layer falls under 10%.

Now the part most men get wrong. Dry skin is about water. Oily skin is about oil. They are two different things, and your face can be short on one while making extra of the other. A 2014 study looked at about 100 women in each of five Asian cities, New Delhi among them. In winter, their skin held less water and lost more of it. Oil output went up. Less water, more oil, on the same face. Your forehead and your cheeks have stopped talking to each other.

Men's skin has its own quirks. A 2018 review of 57 studies found men's skin is 10 to 20% thicker and makes more oil. It also found women's skin holds more water than men's. So a man can shine at noon and feel tight by 4 pm. The skin type test sorts out which one you are.

One more thing about Indian skin. On deeper skin tones, dryness is easier to see. A 2011 paper in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology calls it "ashiness". That is a whitish colour and less shine. That grey look on the cheeks and jaw is dry skin, nothing more. It needs water, not a different tone. A light moisturizer is the whole answer.

What Makes Dry Skin on the Face Worse?

Most dry faces are made at home, one habit at a time.

The hot shower. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) is plain about it: "Taking long, hot showers can also dry your skin." A hot shower is a loan. Your skin pays it back by 11 am. The AAD's limit is five to ten minutes in warm water.

Bar soap. Healthy skin is slightly acidic, with a pH of 5.4 to 5.9. A 2014 study in the Indian Journal of Dermatology tested soaps from local shops and found most had a pH of 9 to 10. High-pH soap raises skin pH. The authors say that increases its "dehydrative effect" and irritability. The AAD's men's page says bar soap "often contains harsh ingredients that can be drying to the skin". The face gets a gentle face wash. The soap or face wash article has the full case.

Hard water. If your tap leaves white scale, your water is hard. A 2018 study of 80 people washed their skin with a common soap ingredient in water of different hardness. Hard water left more soap residue on the skin. That residue raised water loss and caused irritation. The study was done in the UK. Borewell and tanker water in many Indian cities is harder still. Use a small amount of face wash, and rinse well.

Washing too often. The AAD says to "limit washing to twice a day and after sweating". Lukewarm water, fingertips, no scrubbing. Every extra wash takes a little more mortar out of the wall. The face washing article covers how often is enough.

The office AC. Cold air holds less water. A 2006 study put 16 healthy young men in a 25°C room at 10%, 30% and 50% humidity. Below 30%, the authors say, "the eyes and skin become dry". The study was small and Japanese, but the room it describes is every open-plan office in India. The AC has one setting, and that setting is Shimla.

Shaving. A razor takes skin with the hair. A 2023 study in Frontiers in Medicine notes that skin cells make up about 20% of what shaving removes from a man's face. In a lab model of skin, shaving foam reduced the damage and a moisturizer after shaving calmed the reaction. The AAD's shaving advice is short. Wet the skin first. Use a moisturising shaving cream. Shave with the grain. Change the blade after five to seven shaves. A serum with green tea soothes shave irritation. Its mandelic acid stays comfortable on sensitive, freshly-shaved skin.

Too many strong products at once. Exfoliating acids and retinol are useful. Stacked on dry skin, they are not. The AAD warns that over-exfoliating leaves skin "red and irritated". Exfoliating while on retinol "may worsen dry skin". On its dry-skin list, the AAD says to stop products with alcohol, fragrance and retinoids. Wait until the skin settles. Add one product at a time. Wait two weeks before the next.

The chemist's cream. Some over-the-counter creams in India contain a steroid. A 2011 study screened 2,926 patients at 12 Indian dermatology clinics. One in seven was using a steroid cream on the face. Most had bought it as a fairness or general cream or an aftershave. Side effects showed up in 90.5% of them. If a cream fixes your face in a week, ask what is in it.

What Is the Best Moisturizer for Dry Skin on a Man's Face?

A moisturizer does three jobs, and the Indian Journal of Dermatology review names them. Humectants pull water into the skin. Occlusives sit on top and block water from leaving. Emollients are oils that soften. The review calls glycerin "the most effective humectant". It also notes that face products are made to be non-greasy, because the face "is prone to effects of environment". So the face gets a lightweight moisturizer that does the first job well and the second job without a film. Thick body creams are for the body.

Timing matters as much as the tube. The AAD's rule is to apply moisturizer "when your skin is still damp". The Indian review says occlusives "should be applied on moist skin". Wash, pat once, apply. Do not wait for the face to dry.

Then the active that helps the wall rebuild itself. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, has the best data for this job. A 2000 study in the British Journal of Dermatology tested it on cultured human skin cells. Production of ceramides, the main mortar fat, rose 4.1 to 5.5-fold. On dry skin, it raised ceramides and cut water loss. A 2013 study of 20 volunteers applied a niacinamide cream to the forearm twice a day for 28 days. Water loss fell and the top layer grew thicker. Both studies were on lighter skin. A serum with 5% niacinamide strengthens the skin barrier without dryness, which is the job in one line.

Two moisturizers, by concern. Both are lightweight and made for all skin types. Both carry DustShield™. It helps create a barrier against ultra-fine pollution particles like PM2.5.

  • Dull, dry skin, with tan or dark spots: the Intense Bright Vitamin C Moisturizer. Vitamin C, Kojic Acid and Alpha Arbutin help brighten dull skin, reduce dark spots and even out skin tone, while the moisturizer delivers everyday hydration. In a 60-day consumer study, 100% of users agreed their skin felt comfortably hydrated.
  • Oily skin that still feels tight: the Active Oil Control Niacinamide Moisturizer. Salicylic Acid, Mandelic Acid and Green Tea help control excess oil, unclog pores and keep skin clear. It hydrates without grease. The oily-skin moisturizer article explains why oily skin needs one at all.

If most products sting your face, the AAD suggests fragrance-free ones. Patch test anything new on the inside of your arm for a few days first.

How to Moisturize a Man's Face: A Simple Routine for Dry Skin

Four steps. Thirty seconds each, morning and night.

  1. Cleanse. Warm water, never hot. A pea-sized amount of face wash, fingertips only, 30 seconds. If your skin is tight in the morning, plain water is enough until the night wash. Pat dry with a soft towel.
  2. Treat. While the skin is still damp, pat in 3 to 5 drops of serum. Oily or shave-prone skin: the niacinamide serum. Dull or tanned skin: the Vitamin C serum. Give it one minute.
  3. Moisturise. A coin-sized amount of your light moisturizer over the face and neck. Spread it with flat palms until it disappears. Lips get lip balm or a dab of petroleum jelly.
  4. Protect. Mornings only. Sunscreen of SPF 30 or more on the face, neck and ears. The AAD asks for broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, reapplied every two hours outdoors.

On shaving days, shave at the end of the shower, when the hair is soft, then go straight to step 2 and 3. The AAD's dry-skin page says to moisturise "immediately" after shaving. If you are new to all this, the four-step routine for men walks through each step. In a Delhi winter, add the winter article to the list.

Best Moisturizer for Dry Skin in Winter

North Indian winters are hard on a dry face. Cold air, a heater in the room and a hot bath every morning all pull water out of the skin. The study of Asian cities above found the same thing in New Delhi. In winter, skin held less water and lost more of it.

So winter needs a heavier hand. The AAD says "ointments and creams add more moisture to skin and are more effective than lotions". It names the ingredients to look for on the label:

  • glycerin and hyaluronic acid
  • dimethicone and lactic acid
  • shea butter and jojoba oil
  • lanolin, mineral oil and petrolatum

Glycerin is the one the Indian review above calls "the most effective humectant", meaning it pulls water into the skin.

Three changes make the biggest difference from November to February:

  1. Put your moisturizer on damp skin, morning and night, and again after any extra wash.
  2. If your cheeks still feel tight at bedtime, add a thin layer of petroleum jelly on just the dry patches. Keep it off the parts of your face that get pimples.
  3. Run a humidifier in the bedroom while you sleep. The AAD's reason is short. "Dry skin needs moisture."

Lips and the rest of the winter routine are in winter skincare for men.

How Long Does Dry Skin on the Face Take to Go Away?

Two timelines. The tightness eases the same day you start putting moisturizer on damp skin. The flakes and the grey look take longer, because the wall has to rebuild.

The studies give a range. In a 2004 trial of 34 people with dry skin on the legs, skin water content improved in 2 weeks. In the niacinamide study, water loss fell over 28 days. So give the routine 2 to 4 weeks before you judge it. Dry skin does go away, as long as the habits that caused it go away too. If the skin is still dry after a month of the routine, the AAD says it is time to see a dermatologist.

When Should You See a Dermatologist About Dry Skin?

A moisturizer handles tight, flaky skin. It does not handle these. Book a dermatologist if you have:

  • Greasy flakes with redness on the sides of the nose, between the eyebrows or in the beard. The AAD describes this as seborrheic dermatitis, a common scaly rash on the oily areas of the face. It looks like dry skin and is not.
  • Red, itchy patches that keep coming back. That can be eczema, and it needs its own plan.
  • Skin that cracks or bleeds, on the lips, the corners of the mouth or the cheeks.
  • Burning, peeling or new pimples after a cream from the chemist. Stop the cream and take the tube with you.
  • Dryness that arrived with diabetes, a thyroid problem, or a new medicine. The AAD lists all three as causes of very dry skin.
  • Anything that has not improved in 8 to 12 weeks.

Dry Skin on the Face: Common Questions from Men

Can dry skin go away naturally?

Yes, if the cause goes away. Most dry faces come from hot water, harsh soap, hard water, dry rooms and over-washing. The AAD's self-care page fixes all five with habits, not medicine. "Naturally" does not mean "doing nothing". It means warm water, less soap, and a moisturizer on damp skin. If that fails after a month, see a dermatologist.

Can I use Vaseline as a moisturizer on my face?

On the lips and eyelids, yes. The AAD recommends petroleum jelly for dry skin, lips and eyelids, applied "when your skin is damp". For the whole face, it adds a caution: avoid it "if you are acne-prone, as this may cause breakouts in some people". The Indian review explains why it works so well and feels so heavy. It resists water loss 170 times better than olive oil, and it is greasy. On a man's face, a light moisturizer does the sealing job without the shine.

Is coconut oil good for dry skin, and what happens if I use it on my face every day?

Every family has an uncle who swears by coconut oil. He is half right. For the body, it works. A 2004 trial of 34 people with dry legs found coconut oil improved skin water content as well as mineral oil did, in 2 weeks. A 2014 trial of 117 children with eczema found it beat mineral oil over 8 weeks. The face is the other half. India's acne guidelines in the IJDVL say oils "form an occlusive film" that worsens acne "in the acne-prone areas". In plain words, oil can sit in the pores and clog them. So daily coconut oil on a pimple-prone face can mean more pimples. Use it below the neck and give the face a light moisturizer made for the face.

Which oil is best for the face?

For most men, none. Oils seal, but they do not add water, and some do harm. A 2013 study of 19 adults put olive oil on one forearm twice a day for four weeks. It weakened the skin barrier and caused mild redness. Sunflower seed oil on the other arm kept the barrier intact and improved hydration. The authors call it an "unfounded belief that all natural oils are beneficial for the skin". If you want the softness of an oil without the risk, a moisturizer built for the face has emollients in it already.

What is the 7 skin method for dry skin?

A Korean habit. A magazine tutorial describes it as "patting seven layers of toner onto your face", one after another. No trial was found for it this side of a magazine. The useful idea inside it is an old one. Put water-based products on damp skin, then seal them. The AAD says exactly that. One layer of serum on a damp face, then a moisturizer, gets you there in two steps instead of seven.

Dry Skin on the Face: What Men Should Do Tonight

Your skin is not broken. The shower is hot, the soap is harsh, the water is hard and the AC is cold. Change what you can and the rest follows.

Tonight: warm water and a pea-sized amount of a gentle face wash. Pat once. Then 3 to 5 drops of serum. Then a coin-sized amount of a light moisturizer with DustShield™ on the damp face and neck. Tomorrow, the same, plus sunscreen before you leave. Move the bar of soap below the neck. Give it two weeks, and the 3 pm tightness becomes a thing you used to have.
